Miles Sanders
Miles Sanders Looking good early in camp
Tue, Jul 29, 2025, 10:59 AM
Sanders has stood out the most so far in training camp among the Cowboys' running backs, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The former Eagle and Panther is competing with fellow free-agent signee Javonte Williams as well as rookie Jaydon Blue for snaps and touches in what could be a backfield committee for the Cowboys. Sanders has flashed both as a runner and as a pass catcher early in camp, but there likely won't be any clarity on how new head coach Brian Schottenheimer will deploy his running backs until deep into the preseason, assuming the picture clears up at all before Week 1.
Parris Campbell
Parris Campbell Dealing with MCL sprain
Mon, Jul 28, 2025, 7:30 PM
Campbell suffered an MCL sprain in his knee during Dallas' practice Saturday, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: The wide receiver left the session early and had to be helped off the field, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. A day later, though, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Campbell didn't suffer a serious injury and would only miss a few days. The 2019 second-round pick of the Colts is trying to secure a spot with a new team after spending 2024 with the Eagles and 2023 with the Giants.
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Brevyn Spann-Ford Longer absence expected
Mon, Jul 28, 2025, 7:24 PM
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday that Spann-Ford (ankle) is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks, Joe Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Spann-Ford injured his left ankle during Sunday's practice. He was initially set to be sidelined for a few days, but the injury appears to be more severe and puts him in jeopardy of missing the Cowboys' preseason opener against the Rams on Aug. 9. John Stephens and Princeton Fant should get more practice reps in Spann-Ford's absence.
Javonte Williams
Javonte Williams Competing for starting role
Mon, Jul 28, 2025, 11:32 AM
Williams and Miles Sanders seem to be competing for a starting job, according to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News.
Analysis: It's no surprise the veteran free-agent signings are getting most of the first-team snaps during the first week of training camp, but it may not be long before rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue makes a push. There's also no guarantee a starting job comes with a lot of touches, as head coach Brian Schottenheimer has hinted at using a rotation during the regular season. If nothing else, Williams' reputation as a good pass blocker should get him on the field some in the event Sanders and/or Blue ends up earning more touches.
Jaydon Blue
Jaydon Blue Looking good so far
Mon, Jul 28, 2025, 11:28 AM
Blue is having a strong first week of training camp, according to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Analysis: Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Sunday that he's been impressed by Blue's speed, his "dynamic playmaking ability" and "the professionalism he's shown at this camp," per Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site. The last part of the quote may be a veiled reference to when former Cowboys assistant coach Glenn Smith using the term "borderline lazy" to describe Blue in mid-July. That minor controversy aside, everything seems to be going well for Blue at his initial NFL training camp, although early reports still point to veterans Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams getting most of the first-team snaps.
Parris Campbell
Parris Campbell Avoids major injury
Sun, Jul 27, 2025, 8:40 PM
Campbell (lower body) did not suffer a significant injury at practice Sunday, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Campbell exited practice early with the assistance of the training staff due to a lower body injury. The wide receiver is expected to miss a few days, but it doesn't appear like he'll be sidelined for long.
Deuce Vaughn
Deuce Vaughn Expected to return soon
Sun, Jul 27, 2025, 7:32 PM
Vaughn (hamstring) is expected to return to practice this week, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Vaughn has been sidelined at practice with a hamstring injury, but he may be nearing a return to action. The running back is expected to operate as a depth option behind Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders this season, likely making his greatest impact on special teams.
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Brevyn Spann-Ford Expected to miss time
Sun, Jul 27, 2025, 7:23 PM
Spann-Ford (ankle) is expected to miss a few days of practice, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Spann-Ford suffered a left ankle injury at practice Sunday, which is not expected to be serious. The tight end is expected to undergo an MRI in the near future, which will provide more clarity on his status moving forward.
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Brevyn Spann-Ford Injurs leg Sunday
Sun, Jul 27, 2025, 5:44 PM
Spann-Ford suffered a leg injury during Dallas' practice Sunday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Spann-Ford rolled his ankle while blocking on a run play. He was in line to serve as the team's third-string tight end behind Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker, but John Stephens could be in line for an expanded role should Spann-Ford end up being sidelined for an extended period of time.
Jake Ferguson
Jake Ferguson Signs four-year contract extension
Sun, Jul 27, 2025, 10:15 AM
Ferguson and the Cowboys agreed Sunday on a four-year, $52 million extension, with $30 million guaranteed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Ferguson has taken hold of Dallas' No. 1 tight-end role since posting a quiet 2022 rookie campaign, though he saw his numbers drop last year and didn't score a touchdown all season. That can be at least partly attributed to Dak Prescott missing over half the campaign due to injury, though, as the pair has worked well together when Prescott has been healthy. Ferguson ranked second on the Cowboys last season with 86 targets, but there could be less looks to go around in 2025 with George Pickens now in the fold alongside returning target-hog CeeDee Lamb. Nonetheless, with Prescott back to health, Ferguson could be in for a bounce-back campaign, and the Cowboys clearly see him as an important part of their future given the length and amount of the extension.
Parris Campbell
Parris Campbell Suffers leg injury
Sat, Jul 26, 2025, 4:25 PM
Campbell suffered a leg injury during Dallas' practice Saturday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Campbell had to be helped off the field. The severity of the injury is currently unknown, and it remains to be seen if the 28-year-old will need to miss extended time.
John Stephens
John Stephens Participating in training camp
Sat, Jul 26, 2025, 3:11 PM
Stephens (knee) is participating in Dallas' training camp, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Stephens is practicing again after having recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in practice last October. The 2023 undrafted free agent has yet to appear in a regular-season game but will have a chance to make his debut should he earn a spot on the team's final roster.
George Pickens
George Pickens Not yet clicking on deep routes
Sat, Jul 26, 2025, 10:13 AM
Pickens hasn't quite been on the same page as quarterback Dak Prescott on deeper routes during the early part of training camp, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The duo has looked good on short or intermediate routes, but the timing hasn't quite been there further downfield. "I think that's all to come," Prescott said after Thursday's practice. "I don't think that's necessarily something we've got to grow into... For [Pickens], it's just about continuing to master the offense, the routes and the adjustments on certain routes. When he does that, the rest of it is going to come." With CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson as established targets for Prescott nearer the line of scrimmage, Pickens' best chance to make a big impact in the Dallas offense will come as a deep threat, something he's shown he can provide in the past -- the 24-year-old wideout led the NFL with 18.1 yards per catch in 2023 for a Steelers team that featured the uninspiring trio of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky under center.
KaVontae Turpin
KaVontae Turpin Getting work in backfield
Thu, Jul 24, 2025, 10:03 AM
Turpin has taken handoffs with the first-team offense during the first couple days of training camp, Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Analysis: The 28-year-old is locked into a roster spot as the Cowboys' primary kick returner and as a depth option at wideout, but Turpin could be adding more duties to his portfolio. Dallas lacks an established starter in the backfield, with bargain free-agent signings Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders battling with rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, as well as holdover Deuce Vaughn, for snaps and touches, and Turpin appears to be tossing his hat in the ring. While he's unlikely to win the top job outright, he could work in as part of a committee and provide a direct threat to Blue and Vaughn as an undersized speedster who can contribute as a receiver.
Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott Camp workload to be curtailed
Tue, Jul 22, 2025, 9:12 AM
Prescott will have his workload limited in training camp, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports. "Now that he's in the over-30 club, we're going to be smart with some of the things we do with him," new head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday. "He is anti-that. He wants to do as much as possible. Luckily we have the trump card with him on that."
Analysis: Prescott played just eight games last season before going down with a torn hamstring that required surgery, and while the 31-year-old has declared himself fully healthy to begin camp, Dallas isn't going to take any chances with him. The team's $240 million quarterback is likely to see little, if any, preseason action as well as the Cowboys focus on getting him ready for a Week 1 battle with the Super Bowl champion Eagles.
Joe Milton
Joe Milton Will get plenty of reps in camp
Tue, Jul 22, 2025, 9:08 AM
Milton is expected to see plenty of reps with the first-team offense during training camp as the Cowboys limit Dak Prescott's workload, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Prescott's 2024 campaign ended after Week 9 due to a torn hamstring that required surgery, and while the quarterback has declared himself fully healthy to begin camp, Dallas isn't taking any chances with him. Milton, a sixth-round pick of the Patriots in 2024 who was acquired in an April trade, is still something of a project, but the Cowboys are counting on him to be the No. 2 QB this season, so the more work he can get in camp the better.
Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott Declares himself fully healthy
Tue, Jul 8, 2025, 10:36 AM
Prescott (hamstring) said Tuesday that he is fully healthy and will be a full participant at the start of training camp, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Prescott will have a checkup with team doctors ahead of training camp, but he says he's as healthy as can be heading into his 10th NFL season. The veteran quarterback was an on-field participant at OTAs earlier in the spring but hadn't yet been cleared for contact, so it's no surprise to see him nearing 100 percent with training camp opening up later this month. Prescott underwent surgery to repair a partial avulsion of his right hamstring back in November. He's currently coming off the board as a fringe QB1 in early fantasy drafts.
Miles Sanders
Miles Sanders Taking first-team reps
Wed, Jun 11, 2025, 4:33 PM
Sanders and Javonte Williams have been getting most of the first-team reps at June minicamp, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Analysis: Given the alternatives, it's no surprise to see the two free-agent additions handling first-team work, even though both of them averaged less than 4.0 yards per carry in both of the past two seasons. The Cowboys' other running backs right now are rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue, rookie seventh-round pick Phil Mafah and 2023 sixth-rounder Deuce Vaughn. It's anyone's guess how the depth chart might shift before Week 1, with possibilities including a late veteran addition via trade or free agency.
Dak Prescott
Dak Prescott Moving well at OTAs
Wed, May 21, 2025, 9:27 AM
Prescott (hamstring) took part in on-field drills during the Cowboys' second day of organized team activities Tuesday and moved well while throwing passes to wide receivers, including new teammate George Pickens, Calvin Watkin of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Analysis: Prescott said he's "just not cleared for contact" but can otherwise "pretty much do it all" and is "feeling great" in his recovery from hamstring surgery undergone last November. While the Cowboys will continue to take a cautious approach with Prescott's recovery, the veteran quarterback said in April that his right hamstring tear has improved to the point that he feels confident he could suit up for a game, if theoretically needed. The addition of Pickens, whom Dallas traded for in a deal with Pittsburgh in early May, provides Prescott with a playmaking No. 2 receiver option capable of opening things up for superstar CeeDee Lamb, significantly boosting the outlook of the Cowboys' passing offense. While his return to full health remains crucial, Prescott currently looks well positioned to bounce back in 2025 within new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's offense.
Jalen Tolbert
Jalen Tolbert Drops to No. 3 role
Wed, May 7, 2025, 10:36 AM
Tolbert likely will be the Cowboys' No. 3 wide receiver after they traded for George Pickens, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Tolbert enjoyed a breakout of sorts in 2024, his third pro season, with a 49-610-7 receiving line on 79 targets, notably scoring on five of his seven catches inside the 10-yard line. He's never earned targets at a high rate, however, and even last season he saw the ball on just 14.8 percent of routes, the sixth-lowest mark among WRs with 500-plus routes. Tolbert's potential competition for the No. 3 role is explosive return man KaVontae Turpin, who ran only 201 routes last season but was targeted on 25.9 percent of them.
